Great Directors in Shorts

Most filmmakers start out in the short film world, and many never leave it. In this program, we present recent short films by acclaimed feature film directors. In some of these films, we see the directors honing their signature style, while others depart from theirs to explore new modes of expression.

JONATHAN GLAZER’s (Under the Skin, Birth, Sexy Beast) The Fall is a stylish, but nightmarish examination of mob mentality, and a new collaboration with trailblazing composer Mica Levi, who also composed the score to Under the Skin.
Palme d’Or winner APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL’s Blue is a quiet portrait of a sleeping lady on fire, where Weerasethakul’s meditative style gradually gets more impactful, almost oppressive, as the film progresses. Arthouse sensation YORGOS LANTHIMOS (The Favourite, The Lobster, Dogtooth) follows Matt Dillon as he gets acquainted with a strange woman who threatens to take his place as the family patriarch.
PETER STRICKLAND (The Duke of Burgundy, In Fabric, Berberian Sound Studio), whose feature films artfully rework the aesthetic of the 70’s European horror films, has, in collaboration with the musicians of GUO, made something quite different – GUO4 is an experimental film composed of still images, at once violent and erotic.
With Stump the Guesser, GUY MADDIN, with his co-directors Galen Johnson and Evan Johnson, has made yet another delightfully absurd silent-movie pastiche.
